Own publishing business: children’s literature publishing house
Publishing business scares away those wishing to start their own business with a high level of competition, costs and vague prospects due to the active development of the Internet sphere.
Indeed, over the past ten-odd years, several large publishing companies have emerged, to compete with which is almost impossible. Electronic books in their availability and price significantly ahead of the paper edition. Even the main advantages of the latter – the convenience of reading from a sheet, and not from a monitor, and mobility – cease to be so with the advent and spread of small electronic devices and with a screen simulating a paper page.
Nevertheless, one segment of the book publishing market is still of interest for investment – this is the publication of children’s literature.
In the assortment of the largest Russian publishing houses, of course, there is also fiction for all ages, and developmental aids, but this literature, as a rule, is serial and long-circulation.
Publishers choosing a narrow children’s “specialization” prefer “piece” literature – books of modern Russian and foreign authors with high-quality illustrations and printing. Such publications usually come out in small print runs, and the cost of the book in this case is 1.5–2 times higher than the “normal” one.
In the total volume of sales of literature in Russia, children’s literature accounts for about 15%. However, even this small sector is divided among publishers into narrower specializations – developing literature (Karapuz Publishing House), modern children’s fiction (Pink Giraffe), translated literature and reprints (TriMag, Melik-Pashayev).
Analysts attribute a large number of medium and small publishing houses in Russia to the relatively low cost of entering this market. The cost of publishing one book with a circulation of up to 10 tons. is 70-100 p. (the calculation is given for a full-color edition on quality paper of small format and volume). The retail price of such a book will be at least twice as high.
Franchises and Suppliers
The most difficult thing in the work of a publishing house is finding new, promising authors. It is especially dangerous to make a mistake in choosing a young company.
Eminent authors prefer to work with large publishers who can afford to pay high fees and additional costs for advertising their books.
Only beginners to conquer the market have to look for unknown, but promising projects. If the book is unclaimed, it will not be possible to recoup the cost of its publication.
In addition, in the creation and development of their business will have to invest their own funds, as banks rarely lend to young publishing companies, considering this business quite risky.
New projects can be financed from two sources – by attracting private investors or with the help of large publishing companies. In the latter case, the new publisher is more likely to act as an intermediary, while its partner takes care of the preparation, publication and distribution of the book. True, the profit is divided accordingly.
The main person in publishing is the editor. It is he who searches for authors, looks at the manuscripts and decides which of them is worth publishing.
He should be well versed in the subject, know his target audience and be able to anticipate its desires. The success of a book depends largely on the sales manager who determines the sales channels.
Large publishers can afford to maintain a staff of several hundred people. However, smaller companies prefer to give everything, except the search for authors and distribution of the finished product, to outsource.
Moreover, they continue to adhere to such an organization model even when they can already afford to hire staff.
True, to find a brilliant author and artist and to publish a book is only half the work. Now we need to organize its implementation.
Wholesalers are reluctant to take books by unknown authors of equally unknown publishers. Therefore, at first, it is better to engage in self-promotion: agree with bookstores on the sale of the first trial batch of copies, control the display of your books in the sales area, invest in advertising, send the first edition to the editors of magazines publishing reviews of new products on the book market.
Place for your business proposal
Do not go around your attention and online communities. For example, the business literature publishing house Mann, Ivanov and Ferber began promoting their first books through business forums and did not lose. Children’s literature also has its connoisseurs among adults, who organize entire thematic communities and blogs.
As experts say, it is almost impossible to predict the success of a particular publication. Often, the most promising in the opinion of editors and critics of the book is unnoticed by readers, while the first book of an unknown author to anyone becomes a sales hit.
