Writing as a business
Many people dream of writing and releasing at least one book. And some make the writing craft in the main source of stable income. And for this it is not necessary to have a rich imagination and be able to build famously twisted plot lines.
On the Internet you can find a lot of ads about finding authors for writing books. As a rule, these announcements are placed by literary agencies. These are commercial organizations that act as intermediaries between authors and publishers. In fact, they are looking for authors, buying out their full rights to their works and reselling them to publishers, of course, with their markup.
Thus, with the help of a literary agency, you can publish your work, get a certain fame and a symbolic fee. The amount of remuneration to the author, as a rule, is about 1,800 rubles for one author’s sheet (40,000 characters with spaces). In addition to this fee when transferring full rights to an intermediary, you will not receive any interest on the sale of the published book and will not be able to offer it to other publishers in the future.
In addition, the author can contact the literary agency to promote an already finished work (without full transfer of rights) in book publishing houses and editorial offices of the media. As a remuneration for their services, the agency will take about 15% of the fees paid to the author.
Keep in mind that when submitting a manuscript to an agency, most intermediaries require you to pre-order one or more text processing services (reviewing, proofreading and editing) from them before submitting them to publishers. The cost of writing a review of your work will be at least 500 rubles for text up to 20,000 characters or more. Editing services will cost 10-40 rubles for each 1000 characters.
Please note: the literary agency does not guarantee that your publisher will accept your manuscript. They just send it to different editors and publishers with their review.
Thus, if you already have a manuscript, which, in your opinion, may be of interest to the publisher, you can negotiate directly with it. It is best to start with large publishers (for example, AST, Eksmo, Peter, etc.). Some of them have their own specialization, but most of them publish a variety of books in various series.
Franchises and Suppliers
Why do you need a publisher? In case of a positive decision, it assumes the costs of preparing your manuscript for printing, its layout and the actual publication of the book. The author only provides the text and receives a fee. The publishing house is engaged in advertising and promotion of the published book, organizes its sales. If the book succeeds, it organizes a large-scale PR campaign, conducting author’s meetings with readers, conferences, interviews, etc.
When contacting the publisher, you should have a manuscript ready (perhaps not fully edited). In addition, the synopsis is necessarily attached to the manuscript – a brief summary of the contents of your book and a short description. All this should fit on one (maximum two, if it comes to scientific works) A4 sheet.
If this is not about a work of art, then the synopsis indicates the author’s qualifications (evidence of his competence), a brief summary, an indication of the possible target audience and additional explanations (if necessary). A synopsis with a manuscript is sent to publishers. On the website of any major book publisher, the usual postal addresses and e-mail addresses are indicated, which are received from new authors. Then you just have to wait for feedback.
The book market in Russia is currently too saturated. Demand no longer exceeds supply, and publishing business is going through far from best times. Especially hard to sell fiction little-known authors. But niche products are much more in demand. Therefore, if you consider writing not as a hobby and a pleasant pastime, but as a main business, pay attention to the specialized literature. In addition, most novice writers are willing to sacrifice their fee, if only their works saw the light. So they earn their name.
Author fees, as a rule, make up 6-15% of the total cost of circulation. Novice writers can count on fees at the lowest rate – 6 – 8%. That is 10-12% – this is already the rate above the average. In the contract that the publishing company concludes with you, either a fixed amount or a percentage value is indicated, but this does not play a big role.
The cost of circulation is determined as follows: the selling price of one book is multiplied by the number of books published (circulation). And the selling price has little to do with the retail, at which the book will be sold in stores. In the selling price laid the cost of preparing the book for printing, the cost of its publication, transportation costs, overhead costs of the publishing house, royalties.
